An Angel in the Rumble Seat
Yesterday, Sunday July 26, 2009, I took a flight from Texas to California. As I sat down on the plane, in what seemed like an uneventful day, I heard the very quiet voice of God say, “There is an angel on the airplane.” It is easy to ignore God’s voice, normally quiet and still. He often insults our intelligence and our worldview. He wants us to have His way of thinking and it is far different from anything normal in the world. I listened this time.
I asked the Lord, “Am I going to see him? Or, do you want me to ask? Why is the angel on this airplane.” I got nothing more at that moment. So, I prayed that I would have the alertness and discernment to see this angel. I think that would be really cool.
As I took a comfort break in the back of the airplane, I saw that I was unable to enter the toilet, it was occupied. I looked at a man seated in the stewards pull down chair. I asked if he was in line. He very shyly pointed both hands to the toilet and said, “No, no,” and gestured that I was next in line.
Then I looked at the stewardess, wondering if that area was restricted. It was a small area that was the workspace & seating area for the staff-the galley. I said, “ Am I allowed here.”
“No, you should wait in the aisle a few rows back,” she pointed. What made that strange was the presence of this other young man sitting in her rumble seat in the galley. It was hard to make out his age. He was maybe 40 but had a rough complexion like a teenager-but still seemed attractive.
He was wearing loud orange shorts and a t-shirt and had red hair with a blond tint to it. I figured he was an airline employee deadheading on the flight, but the stewardess did not seem to notice him or talk to him at all. This is very unusual. My experience is that employees will visit, especially when someone not on the assigned crew is present. They will chat about people and places in their work or make friends. No, this stewardess did not notice this man.
I thought he was not dressed appropriately for an employee even if deadheading. Then I started thinking-employees on flights not working on the flight are required to have an assigned seat.
I visited the toilet again at the end of the long flight. This “man” was still there. I realized now that this man was the angel God told me was on the plane. No one else seemed to notice him and he had no assigned seat but rather was seated in the stewardess’s landing seat.
Why am I sharing this? God wanted me to share it with you. I have seen angels before. I do not often share this and have never publicly reported an angel. Times have changed. We need the angels. Why is this one appearing now? He knows who is going to visit blogs and when. He is God. This is a personal message for you, too.
I was on a family trip. This is a personal angel. I am sure we all have them assigned to us. I saw this one dressed very differently walking one cold winter night. It was similar to this appearance. It “looked” perfectly normal but seemed very wrong. This was my experience both times, and he was “shy,” if not certainly reticent. So, why did this happen:
- I am on a family trip as I write this and as I saw the angel. We are celebrating an important passage with many family members on this very day. The last verse in the Old Testament is very clear about God’s desire to bond the older and younger generations-he says:
- “He will convince parents to look after their children and children to look up to their parents. If they refuse, I’ll come and put the land under a curse.” Mal. 4:6 (The Message)
- This angel seems to always be an indicator for me of the progress in the healing of my heart, which took massive work over the years. This is why I ever noticed angels in the first place. He was sitting by the “bathroom;” the place of elimination. This is about healing of the heart-the process of eliminating toxins of the heart and soul.
- I worked at two universities having orange as their prominent school colors at an earlier season of my life. This angel seems to be saying that God is restoring what was lost and reconnecting me to an extraordinarily fruitful time of ministry and “spiritual family” in my life. Perhaps he is going to restore my work with younger people and “make me younger.” This was a promise to Job.
- I saw him on the airplane-a fast moving vehicle carrying a lot of people. This is an important theme in my life right now and God is confirming this- “fasten your seatbelt, Bob, and remember I am serving you and looking after you just like the stewardess does-but with spiritual power.”
- God wanted me to encourage all of you to look for angels and stop “worrying” about why you have or have not not seen them before and enjoy God’s being in control. He has blessings for us and wants us to have faith, to lose our fear of intimacy with Him and with each other.
God is saying to us to expect people who cannot be picked out in a crowd to be the leaders (servants) of this coming awakening. That is what this man’s appearance was-not glorious, not with wings and robes, not with blinding light-just some casual street clothes and ordinary. He also wants all of us to be reminded that He desires to meet our needs and wants but must speak to us to have a relationship. We must listen. Angels are one way God gives us messages, along with dreams and visions: this is why I have started this blog.
This blog is “everyman” hearing from God in many ways. That is why my identity is not to be an issue in this blog. He does not want stereotypes of any kind to hinder his purposes now.
Remember, the name came from a dream. I came to a place after a long journey and asked God what this place was (in the dream,) on top of a mountain. He answered, “This is Bahamabob’s where you can get everything.”
I am including the passage from the oldest book in the Bible, Job. It describes ways God speaks to people and some reasons. This particular angel was assigned, I believe, to see to the day God would say to me (and to you about your heart, too) from Job’s book: “Before you know it you are the picture of health.” This passage is a brief of my own life story:
“When men & women are deep in sleep, “In a dream, for instance, in a vision of the night;
Fast asleep in their beds—God opens their earsand impresses them with warnings
To turn them back from something bad they’re planning, from some reckless choice,
And keep them from an early grave, from the river of no return.
“Or, God might get their attention through pain, by throwing them on a bed of suffering,
So they can’t stand the sight of food, have no appetite for their favorite treats.
They lose weight, wasting away to nothing, reduced to a bag of bones.
They hang on the cliff-edge of death, knowing the next breath may be their last.
“But even then an angel could come, a champion—there are thousands of them!—
to take up your cause, A messenger who would mercifully intervene,
canceling the death sentence with the words: ’I've come up with the ransom!’
Before you know it, you’re healed, the very picture of health!” (Job 33:15-25 The Message)
(If you want to report an angel you saw, please do so in the comments, or email me at <bahamabob@mac.com> and tell me!

That’s pretty exciting that God told you there was an angel and that you actually saw him! I felt really happy when reading this post. It reminded me of God’s unique love towards us. Thanks for sharing, Bob.
Thank you for posting this beautiful and extremely personal story. We all need to open our eyes and hearts to the blessings God is showering us with. So many times we’re too busy to hear His voice or to look for the angels. The scriptures tell us there are thousands upon thousands of them. Our prayers release them. Your itimacy with the Lord is something we all hunger for. God bless you for boldly sharing your visions and dreams.
Thank you Virginia for your kind remarks. It seems what the internet has offered us is a surprise. We seek and sometimes find intensely personal connection on a screen! I am glad we can do this. I think this story confirms that we are around millions of angels all the time but need to learn to recognize them and learn how to look for them. Then we need to know why they are there. I think there must be more on this particular one, but we shall see. Bob
I’m sure your story is true because I’m sure an angel helped me once. However, I can’t agree that the Father “…often insultes our intelligence…” He gave it to us. If we are bragging or proud or using it with malice, He will let us gain our reward from those actions, but I don’t think He insults us.
Hi Agnes,
I can see my answer is actually a blog in itself. I am not talking about the wonderful capacity of our minds. I am talking about the clear difference in God’s way of doing and thinking and man’s worldly approach. I believe in order to change we must consider three things at least in this little unit of thought: 1) 1 Sam 16:7; “The Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart.” 2) “For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’,” I Corinthians 3:19. 3) “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9.
The redeemed mind comes through a process of transformation to think more like God. One person commented, but not on this blogpost, that this story reminded them of times when God tested this in them and they felt they failed. However, the test made them ready for the future. It related to angels visiting disguised as homeless or unkempt people who are not attractive. The world tells us one thing in that instance, worldly wisdom, and God wants us to pray for discernment, to think like Him. So, that is what I was meaning. You might still not agree. I am not trying to get everyone to agree or to disagree. In this case I was mostly telling a story and giving my own growth experience. Each experience like this has caused me to change the way I think, so that is the “insult” I am speaking of-the insult meaning the way Jesus spoke to the men who criticized John the Forerunner for eating strangely, wearing “weird” clothes and living in the wilderness; yet the same men criticized Jesus for dressing nicely, eating and drinking in public places with anyone who was hungry for God, people considered sinners. That sort of crafty thinking was an insult to God on the other foot. Jesus was angry at those men and told them they could not have it both ways.
I hope all can see more clearly what was the spirit of my blog on that. Also, I am really grateful you read and commented. Perhaps you could tell your story someday on my blog. I have found that a surprising number of people encounter angels but rarely if ever speak of it to anyone. I also have found people love these stories. You or anyone can send me a story to bahamabob@mac.com if you are interested in seeing it posted either as a guest blogger or some other way. I edit or decide without any comment-there are many reasons to post or not to post a story and I would decide. I hope you tell your story somewhere!
Please see Job 33:28-33
No question angels have been dispatched in large numbers. Sometime it may not appear that way. Yet, we sense their presence and see their works in all manner of things…………. this is truly a dynamic period…a time of greatest risk and also of greatest reward.
Would like to suggest a book by James MacDonald GRIPPED BY THE GREATNESS OF GOD!
Thank you Bob for serving the Lord with passion! We are all the better for it, and I for one am most grateful for your words of encouragement.
Will return for more comments at another time.
Be blessed! May you always have His peace.
Kirstin
Thank you Kirsten for the wonderful comment. It is so obvious to me you have exchanged your life for the life of Christ. I looked up the book you suggested and have a link for anyone wanting to look at it, reviews or buying options on Amazon: http://bit.ly/N2h34 Looks great-how could any book on Isaiah be much else?
“…a time of greatest risk and greatest reward” is really a theme in my blog, but especially this week. Thank you for articulating it so well. I keep hearing this morning in my mind’s ear, “Wake up, little children!!”
Bob
