He Really Means It

23 July 2009 6 Comments

Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater
works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. ~John 14:11-14 NKJV

Some of us have read the above passage many times in our lives but somehow wonder if it really means what it says. Actually, it resolves a lot of doubt that people carry if they would just take his word for it. We will do greater works than Jesus-the works that HE did. What were those? Healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, reaching out to the harassed and downcast with good news, even raising the dead and many more. I am not saying this, I am quoting Jesus of Nazareth.

Some are asking the same questions I asked forever but finally gave in-is the supernatural suspended now? No, he said if you are a believer. This passage is so simple and so profound.

Why should we be concerned when amazing things out of our normal abilities as human happen in the name of Jesus? That is why he came. Further, he wants us to represent him to the world to the Father. Faith gives birth to faith, so get in an atmosphere of people who believe John 14 and you might be surprised at what can happen. Some are saying, “I do not know any other people who believe this.” Then ask God to give you some! Or, just believe. He did not say you must have others present. In fact, often he asked the “crowd” to leave and healed people alone or with only one in the room. Your faith is enough. It is Him, not you, that must come through.

Others are saying, “I have seen healing and miracles. So I believe.” Is there any miracle of Jesus you have not seen? Is there a greater miracle, because he said we would see greater things. I am not sure what all those things are, but I know he said it and I expect it. I also believe this is a time that he wants us to stray away from the prison of believing in no miracles, no power, and to live as he did, because that is what he said he wants. He does not want the status quo, no matter what the status! He is moving and we are to move with him. Then he will lead us to do his works; and he will empower them.

He presented the gospel in this passage, the “good news” it actually translates into English. It was that if we saw him, and believed, we have seen and known the Father. Believe in Him, believe also in me. That is the gospel. This frees us up to know him, to walk with him in the cool of the day and fellowship. This frees us up to see creative miracles of food becoming more food, and more, and then having more than we started with at the end after feeding many. He loves doing this. This is the gospel-good news!

    Dear Bob,
Great post! I struggle in this area of believing “greater things shall we do” but you are absolutely right, Jesus said it! If he said it, and we are Christians, we should take Him at His word! Carrie has been reading a book called “God’s Generals” about dynamic revivalists and healers. Some amazing stories of healing and world impact! Thanks for this post!

Thank you for your candor, Rod. I feel you summed up what
millions of people think, believe or feel, if not most everyone. I know only a handful personally who have broken through to live this profound understanding of who HE is and that He came to bring us to understand that by faith we would bring all the things existing in heaven to earth. “This gospel of the Kingdom (of heaven) shall be preached throughout the earth…” I think sometimes we have only believed and preached a gospel of salvation and missed the whole of it. It is much more!

    Dear Bob,
Excellent passage. For many years I “beleived” that Jesus was the son of God. However, I knew Jesus about as well as I knew George Bush. I knew George Bush was the President but, I didn’t convene with him and talk to him on a daily basis. I didn’t know him well enough to call him on AirForce One and ask him for a small favor.

My point is when I began walking with the Lord, I developed a relationship that was based on trust and love. I trust & beleive God when he says: “Melinda, your about to get pushed off that cliff and just watch how I prove to you and others that People really can fly.” I know that God is the ultimate “handyman”. I beleive in my heart that he can fix anything if and when he desires and If we call on him in our hour of prayer. Is God Santa Claus? Not hardly. However, take a good look around and it’s clear & evident God is no where close to being fresh outta’ miracles either.

    Thanks so much,
    Melinda

    Hi Melinda,
Thanks for putting it so clearly. Is it not wonderful to know God, not just know about God? I am so glad you have come & joined us here. He seems to prefer to “push us off the cliff.” I think this is why many people are afraid to know Him. But then the “suddenlies” come in. Suddenly he lifts us with the angels as we fall. Blessings and I look forward to more comments from you. Bob
